Unusual Uses For Cable Ties – Part 2

02.11.2015

Continuing from last week’s blog, we have yet more examples to demonstrate how cable ties can be used in a multitude of different ways, to make our lives easier. A cable tie is such a simple item and yet they are unbelievably versatile and useful!

  1.      Temporary Child Proofing

Secure cabinet doors temporarily by securing a cable tie around or through two handles. This can be useful for keeping dangerous (or delicious) items out of a small child’s reach when you have visitors in your home. Simply cut the tie off when you need to access the cupboard or cabinet again.

  1.      Christmas Decorations

Hanging wreaths, Christmas lights and decorations is a doddle when you have a stash of cable ties to hand and they are particularly handy for hanging tree decorations when the hook or loop on the ornament has broken.

Save yourself the nightmare of spending an hour untangling your lights each year by strapping them into a neat bundle and securing in place with a cable tie before you put your lights away at the end of the Christmas season.

  1.      Cycle In Snow With Bike Chains

The theory here is to create the same effect as snow chains on car tyres, by attaching cable tyres to your bike tyres. In snowy conditions, the cable ties will provide you with extra traction and help to reduce the risk of your tyres slipping in the snow.

  1.       Unblock Plugholes

As bizarre as it may sound, you can actually use cable ties to unblock your plugholes in the sink, shower or bath. They are particularly effective at removing long strands of hair that has a nasty habit of collecting up and causing a blockage over time.

Take a medium to large sized cable tie and make some diagonal slits up one side using a craft knife. The cable tie will poke through the smallest of spaces with ease and any hair will be caught in the grooves, making it easy to clear and remove the blockage.

  1.      Detain A Prisoner!

The police and military forces have used certain types of cable ties since the mid sixties as a type of handcuff to detain prisoners. Some use a single strap around the wrist, whereas others incorporate two interlocking straps, looking more like a traditional handcuff.

The appeal of this type of plastic cuff is the fact that they are inexpensive and incredibly lightweight, making them an ideal choice for any large-scale operation or situation where a high number of arrests are anticipated.
